General Questions

What do I do if Orderly Shutdown does not work?

  • Re-click the shutdown button and select Emergency.

Do I have to keep the MCS console open for the application to work?

  • No. MCS runs as a Windows NT service. If the service is running, the console may be closed.

Why doesn't the MCS connect to the LDAP directory server when I try to import a user list?

  • Ensure connectivity to the LDAP directory server on port 389 and check Windows NT Challenge/ Response authentication is allowed for LDAP queries. The MCS user must have permissions to query the LDAP directory.
  • Ensure the LDAP directory is enabled and users' last names have been entered into the directory.

Why are users not deleted when I remove a user list source?

  • You must click Update after removing the user list source.

Can I hide METAmessage mailboxes from the Global Address List?

  • No.

Can I change the password or domain of the MCS domain user account?

  • Yes. After making the change, update the MCS domain user account settings by running the User Change application from the Start Menu METAmessage group.

Can I change the MCS domain user account to run as a different user?

  • Yes. Run the User Change application from the Start Menu METAmessage group and enter the updated settings. Note that if the MCS flows use MAPI profiles, the profiles must be recreated by the new user and parameters must be updated in all of the affected flow protocols.

Can I change the machine name or domain of the MCS server?

  • Yes, but the MCS will need to be reinstalled after making this change.

What impact will upgrading from Exchange 5.5 to 2000 have on MCS?

  • In Exchange 2000/Active Directory, you'll now have Read/Print/Lookup/GetFile "Users" with corresponding mailboxes. In Active Directory, grant Full Mailbox Access to the MCS domain user account for each of these Users/Mailboxes.

How do I manually uninstall the MCS version 3.1?

  • Contact Onset support for an uninstall executable.

With the MCS installed on the same machine as the BES, why has general mail performance suffered?

  • When installing the MCS on the same machine as a BES, you may wish to set MCS engine CPU priorities to Below normal or Lowest to avoid slowing BES processes. To set engine CPU priority, open the Properties dialog for an engine on the console Engine Hosts tab.

Why does printing to network printers generate "Could not convert this particular attachment" alerts?

  • Make sure the MCS domain user account has been granted access to the particular printer.
  • Check the printer for any problems such as low toner or paper jams.
  • In the Windows Control Panel on the MCS computer, check that a METAmessage printer exists.

Why can't I get Java-based clients working?

  • Check Settings on user handhelds. Confirm that the email addresses are set correctly, and that the URL path points to the IIS server. The URL path should be in this format: http://555.555.555.555/ metamessage.
  • Verify that the WWW Publishing Service is running on the IIS Web Link server.
  • Verify that the handheld has GPRS connectivity.
  • Verify that handhelds are connected to a BES that is version 3.5 or higher, with MDS enabled. Note that MDS is not enabled by default.
  • Verify that users are enabled for MDS. This is a separate step from enabling MDS at the server.
  • There must be at least one "MDS Push Server" in the organization.
  • In the BES Management console, it is sometimes helpful to select Update email to PIN mapping.
  • Check that user transactions are showing up in the MDS logs on the BES.
